Cloud data protection startup Nightfall AI announced it had raised USD 40 million in a new funding round. These funds will be used to extend its reach, expand its integration, and partner ecosystem, and develop new products.

WestBridge Capital led the Series B round. Some other firms that participate include Bain Capital Ventures, Venrock, Pear VC, and various individual investors, including actor Paul Rudd.

Nightfall AI, founded in 2018, now offers a cloud data loss prevention technology that enables businesses to identify, categorize, and secure sensitive data across all cloud apps, including services. The platform uses machine learning to detect sensitive data across apps with high precision across applications and automatically resolves data exposure and hygiene concerns without affecting the end user.

The company contends that data sprawl is ubiquitous and increasingly getting worse due to the sheer volume of data and significant expansion in the number of enterprise cloud apps. The transition to a hybrid workplace has undermined the traditional perimeter, leading to poor data security hygiene and unintentional exposure.

The platform has an invisible, out-of-the-box deployment with integrations, including Google Drive, Confluence, GitHub, Slack, Salesforce, and Jira, with no end-user impact or agents to install. According to the company, the platform’s high-accuracy detection in the platform prioritizes concerns with secrets, passwords, protected health information, and personally identifiable information to prevent alert fatigue.

On Nightfall’s platform, in-application remediation and data context result in granular action on sensitive data. It provides users with complete knowledge of violations and the ability to automate responses to reduce administrative burden.

In conjunction with the Nightfall Developer Framework, Nightfall data protection provides an open, flexible platform for developers to incorporate its data categorization and protection capabilities everywhere. The platform offers a collection of cloud-hosted application programming interfaces and software development kits for the detection engine. The firm has partnered with Snyk Ltd., Cribl Inc., Virtru Corp., Hanzo Archives Inc., and others to increase its partners’ capabilities by integrating its detecting skills into their products

Isaac Madan, Nightfall’s co-founder and chief executive, said, “Legacy solutions aren’t designed for the cloud and don’t interface natively with modern applications, and as a result, they deliver low accuracy, incomplete coverage, and limited actionability for resource-constrained security teams. Traditional data loss prevention solutions have become ineffective and expensive to manage, and the category is in dire need of reinvention.”
