On Monday, May 11, 2020, IBM announced that Vodafone Idea Limited (VIL), an Indian telecom operator, has chosen Open Universal Hybrid Cloud powered by IBM and Red Hat for core network functions and IT workloads.
The new platform adopted by the company enables IT and network applications to operate on a common cloud architecture. The new hybrid cloud platform is widely distributed across several microsites in India, along with central IT operations run by IBM.

The Open Universal Hybrid platform is built on open technology and open standards by IBM and Red Hat. The platform is engineered to support Vodafone Idea Limited to cater to about 300 million subscribers by streamlining and transforming its IT and telecom network operations.
As the platform enables IT and network applications to run on the same architecture, the design looks promising. It significantly delivers a breakthrough in ROI improvements by optimizing CapEx and OpEx business models and improving investment in automation and skill set across IT and network.
Additionally, the platform makes possible radical automation with the help of standardization. Not just this, but a plethora of capabilities by IBM and Red Hat, including Watson AI and Red Hat Ansible Automation Platform, are projected to strengthen VIL’s capacity in the network and IT planning.
The Vodafone Idea and IBM partnership aims at offering mobile security services and plans to extend the success quotient with further B2B offerings with the power of new Open Universal Cloud as edge computing, which gets IT applications and network on a shared infrastructure.
