Fly.io, a Chicago, IL-based software supply community firm, announced that it had raised USD 12M in Sequence A funding and USD 25M in Sequence B funding.

While Andreessen Horowitz led the Sequence B fundraising, Intel Capital led the Sequence A funding. Additional participants in the most recent Sequence B round included Sam Lambert, the CEO of Planetscale, and Dell Technologies Capital. After the Sequence A round, Intel Capital’s Senior Managing Director Nick Washburn joined the company’s board of directors to give development a push.

The company is currently hiring and has about 35 employees. While acknowledging that it’s easier said than done, Mackey said that he spends a lot of time considering how to create a more diverse workforce.

He added, “I think we’ve done a few things well to make progress, but I also think that as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized this is a priority that remains important but never gets solved.”

Mackey believes that developers do not completely comprehend the term edge computing. All they know is that they want to run their applications closer to the user to make them more responsive. He believes traditional ways to achieve this via a Content Delivery Network (CDN) are flawed. This is why he started Fly.io to deliver applications close to the user more efficiently.

The company plans to use the funding to expand its regional footprint and hire more engineers and builders in open supply communities.
