Radix Engineering and Software recently confirmed that ISA CTEEP, one of Brazil’s leading private electric transmission concessionaires, would concentrate on a Radix-built Artificial Intelligence (AI) platform for developing its services. The aim is to improve decision-making and execute best practices that provide comprehensive and more efficient control room management. With less chance of interference, final energy consumers will also benefit from a more stable supply system.

The project was designed to assist decision-making in operation by monitoring and classifying system variables, as well as indicating possible control actions for the system.

The primary goal of developing an AI tool was to address three areas. The first one concerning Voltage Control by monitoring the variables of the electrical system operated on AI models, thus helping generate actions, analyze, and suggest control and decision making by the Transmission Operation Center to guarantee operational stability. Second, AI will act to improve the understanding of the operating situation in the classification and clustering of alarms displayed to the operator.

The third and final tool includes the implementation of an intelligent video wall displaying dynamic information in the operating room. Better management of the control room increases situational awareness and mitigation of human failures is what video wall will showcase.

Thus, based on studies and techniques of high-performance Human Machine Interface (HMI), the three strands will get implemented.

ISA CTEEP operates a complex transmission network in 17 of the 26 states in Brazil, through which 32% of all electricity generated in the country travels and nearly 93% travels in the state of São Paulo. Its electrical system consists of 18,000 km of transmission lines and 126 substations.

“With the AI tool developed by Radix, ISA CTEEP will immediately gain more efficient control over the system’s variables to generate more assertive actions. The final energy consumer will also benefit from a more stable supply system and less chance of interference,” says Tássio Simioni, Energy Manager at Radix, one of those responsible for developing the tool.

The solution is the outcome of an ANEEL Research and Development project to explore the use of AI (artificial intelligence), generate innovative solutions for operating centers, and was driven by the constant search of ISA CTEEP to implement continuous improvements in the operation of its system.
